As Congress prepares next year’s budget, I ask that they consider a moral budget that works for everyone. Please do not increase military spending as proposed by the White House budget.
Currently our budget gives more money to the military than the next seven countries combined. The US spends more than three times on the military than China and 10 times more than Russia. At the same time the Pentagon is the only federal agency never to have passed an audit. A 2015 pentagon internal report found $125 billion in waste over five years.
Keeping our country safe is more than just spending money on war. It also means ensuring everyone has food, shelter and medical care. Rather than giving more money to an agency that can not tell us where that money is going, I urge our congressman, Denny Heck, to vote to make sure our money is supporting our values: caring for people and land we live on.
