Good news found in updated data from the Census Bureau: the poverty rate has fallen!!
Disturbing news found in legislative reports: the programs that brought about the good news face gutting in the wake of proposed tax cuts.
Don’t be fooled by the misnomer “tax reform”. These cuts are stripping basic assistance from people facing poverty in order to balance out tax cuts for the wealthy. It’s wrong!
Programs like SNAP (formerly called food stamps) and Earned Income Tax Credits lifted more than 12 million more people out of poverty last year. Why would we squelch something that is working to well?
Call your elected members of Congress to assure they are protecting federal anti-poverty programs during these trying times. Let’s stand together with families and children here in Washington and across our country.
