Trump’s got it all wrong. Immigrants that come to America represent the best of their populations, not the worst. People who choose to leave their homeland for a chance at a better life are basically the cream of the crop. It’s the losers that stay behind.
I believe that is one of the reasons America is such a great nation, because it is made up of people who had the strength and courage to pick themselves up from whatever hardships they were experiencing and travel mostly great distances across land or sea to get here. That’s not something thieves and rapists do -- it’s what people with character and heart do.
Besides, unless you’re Native American, we’re all immigrants, or descendants thereof. My family came from Germany in the 1880s, just like Trump’s did. His great grandfather settled in Alaska, while mine settled in Ohio. But now he and I are both here as Americans.
I spent 10 years in my youth working the orchards of Eastern Washington where I knew many illegal immigrants who were from Mexico and Central America. Aside from the occasional derelict, most of them were honest, hardworking men who never broke the law (they could get deported for a traffic stop), and sent money home to their families. And my father once helped legally smuggle some Afghan doctors with their families into the United States during their war with Russia, then all the kids became productive professionals.
Immigrants are the stem cells of our successful society.
