After reading the recent story, I was blown away by city spokeswoman Cathy Butler’s approach on the Olympia Toy Run.
I have been riding in it for the last 32 years. Some say this is not a community affair. But who are these people who line the sidewalk as we ride by?
As for the cost, I cannot, for the life of me, see the problem.
Basic math tells me that this function brings a large infusion of much-needed cash to the community. 17,000 bikers using five gallons of gas at $3 per gallon brings $255,000 into the local community and double that for food $510,000 and the cost of the toys a minimum of $170,000 gives a total of $935,000 and I cannot think of any other one-day event that can approach these numbers.
Never miss a local story.
I believe that the Olympia City Council needs to go back to the drawing board and reconsider their tenuous position.
What Olympia needs is a mass exodus from the City Council.
