The recent talk of senators and representatives possibly sitting with members of the other party for the State of the Union address reminded me of my visit to Norway's Parliament last year. I was in Norway as part of a Rotary exchange and one of our activities was to tour the Parliament with a member of Parliament.
He said that in Norway they sit in Parliament by region, and then by party within the region. It is better for all the representatives from one area to sit together, since they are representing the same people.
I wish our senators and representatives worked together for our region, instead of seeming to have primary allegiance to their national parties.
Seating may be symbolic, but our usual seating by party makes it seem like they can’t even be polite to one another, much less solve the problems we all share.
