We have become a nation "of the corporations, by the corporations, and for the corporations."
The Supreme Court decision in Citizen’s United vs. Federal Election Commission opened the floodgates to unlimited amounts of money from corporations and rich individuals into our political system to advance their corporate interests and political beliefs.
Recently in Rancho Las Palmas Resort in Rancho Mirage, Calif., a caucus of wealthy radical right-wing conservatives met behind closed doors.
David and Charles Koch (Libertarians), owners of Koch Industries, held one of their semi-annual secret meetings. Participants are asked to donate to conservative causes. Past participants included Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia, media personalities like Glenn Beck, and right-wing members of Congress.
Koch Industries is the second-largest privately owned company in the United States. The Koch brothers finance organizations fighting legislation related to climate change, underwriting a huge network of foundations, think tanks (The Heritage Foundation), and political front groups (tea party). The brothers have funded opposition campaigns against many Obama administration policies – from health care reform to the economic stimulus program.
Charles Lewis, the founder of the Center for Public Integrity, a nonpartisan watchdog group, said, “The Kochs are on a whole different level. There’s no one else who has spent this much money. The sheer dimension of it is what sets them apart. They have a pattern of lawbreaking, political manipulation, and obfuscation. I’ve been in Washington since Watergate, and I’ve never seen anything like it. They are the Standard Oil of our times.”
