I attended the labor solidarity rally Feb. 26, and was glad to lend my voice in support of the concerns of public servants here and across the nation. They are legitimately worried about the actions of the governor of Wisconsin, and threats to organized labor in several other states.
I have an additional worry related to the demonization of public employees – especially school teachers.
What message does this send to students who are considering their options for a career? At a time when we need the best and the brightest in our classrooms, vile attacks on teachers can do nothing but make young, prospective teachers reconsider their options and decide on a different career choice.
As a grandparent, I stand in awe of the terrific teachers guiding my grandchildren, and I would be most pleased if they themselves became teachers. However, given the current political climate, it will be understandable if they pursue other careers which are being granted more respect.
