On March 2, the Supreme Court upheld the right of Westboro Baptist church to protest at military funerals. This is the group that shows up with signs that say "God hates fags" and "Thank God for dead soldiers." This is hate speech at its worst but it is protected by the First Amendment.
As a Christian I condemn the actions of the hate mongers at Westboro. Their message contradicts what the Bible tells us about God. Many people have seen signs at sporting events that have John 3:16 written on them, but how many know that this scripture states: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life”?
This does not say that God only loves those who believe in him or only those who live as decent human beings. God loves every person on this earth; even the folks at Westboro and he wants the best for everyone.
In John 15:12 Jesus says, “My command is this: love each other as I have loved you.” This message is fundamental to all that we as Christians are called to be.
It grieves me to think of the pain the Westboro clan causes those families who are already mourning the loss of a loved one. I believe that God is also grieved by their venomous message. I pray that they will turn from their message of hate and share God’s true message of love.
