I read with much interest and amazement the letter that former Olympia Master Builders chief executive Doug DeForest wrote regarding the construction of Amtrak station.
As a person who belonged to the Amtrak Depot Committee for over four years, many of DeForest’s comments are just not true.
The OMB did provide quite a bit of materials and labor and we thank them.
But the person who was the project coordinator was Robert Bregent and his crew, not the OMB.
Bregent was under the direction of the ADC and not the OMB. We appointed Bregent and anything he did as work on the station was under our direct control.
I know that Bregent and his crew built approximately 80 percent of the station and provided almost all the labor for the station proper.
DeForest’s comments that he doubts if the station would have ever been built without the OMB is ridiculous.
The ADC was the organization that kept the ball rolling and raised money by selling bricks, etc.
DeForest also does not mention in any prominence the work the volunteers who have done yeoman’s work for more than 18 years.
I have known Bregent for years and a harder worker there is none.
He and his crew were working not only during the week, but many times on the weekends.
In conclusion, we thank the OMB for what they did, but some of DeForest’s statements are just not true. He puts in what he wants, but leaves out much more.
