Until people wake up and realize that the rich aren't being asked to make the same sacrifices the middle class are being asked to make; until people realize they are being spun to think of only guns, gays and abortion to the detriment of their own lives, we stay stuck.
The new northern state Republican governors are moving to take advantage of the economic panic to push through unprecedented reforms and become just like their southern nonunion counterparts who just happen to have some of the worst budget deficits.
Their well-publicized breaking of unions is nothing in comparison to what is coming.
How would we feel if our governor decided to take over the Olympia School Board or the Olympia City Council because they were running a deficit – because she stopped sending them money?
That’s what new Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is planning on doing. He has 100 trained commissars or czars to take over any municipality in an emergency. Those commissars can fire everyone and give the jobs to their cronies, or the corporations that supported the governor.
Snyder wants to cut business taxes by 86 percent, lowering revenue from $2.1 billion to $293 million, a drop of $1.8 billion.
He plans to make up that gap by taxing the lowest income bracket (bottom 20 percent) by 8.9 percent while taxing the top 1 percent just 5.3 percent (Forbes).
I’d call that a government takeover of our elected officials and a very regressive tax system.
