The time is now. Look at the progress in the Nisqually Delta. What a beautiful sight to see.
I’m not an Indian or an activist. I am however a concerned citizen. Why are we still talking about draining Capitol Lake and removing the dam? Let’s just do it.
The lake is polluted so badly that we can’t swim in it, so that means it is also dangerous to fish, birds and other wildlife as well. Let’s quit cowing to a few troublemakers and get on with the program of transforming it into an estuary like Nisqually.
Years ago man did not understand the problems these dams were going to cause. The Elwa River Dam is soon to be breached. Over the years it has cut the salmon output by millions or more.
Wildlife, fish, and birds will flourish. Just think about it. Every day of every year, forever, nature will wash the delta with fresh saltwater. Life will flourish. There will be oysters, clams and all sorts of food for man and wildlife.
Because of a high rate of siltation the lake must be dredged every so often to keep it from filling up. Then there is the milfoil infestation, a major problem. Doing some research I see the reason the lake is closed to swimming is danger of E. coli, and that a decision has been to maintain it as a freshwater lake until 2013.
Let’s be sensible, and give the estuary back to Mother Nature. She knows best.
