As a senior citizen and lifetime resident of Thurston County, I consider myself to be a conservative independent. I am pleased to see that we have local candidates who have chosen to run for office as independents. I intend to support them.
In 1980, I was a candidate for county commissioner here in Thurston County. I made the decision to run following a casual conversation with then Olympian editor Dean Shacklett. I also ran as an independent. Records will show that I received the endorsement of The Olympian. Records will also show that I was not elected to office.
It was an educational experience which I do not regret. I am disillusioned with our present political climate. Neither of the two major parties are conducting themselves in a truly responsible manner. As the two parties compete, I am reminded of children quarreling in a sandbox. I reflect on the past and retain a bit of hope for our future.
Never miss a local story.
