I’m a veteran, former paramedic, gun owner, and father of two boys. I am concerned about the background check loophole in Washington state. It is too easy for known felons and convicted abusers to buy guns at gun shows or from unlicensed sellers online without a background check.
In order to protect our children and ourselves we need to enact smarter, more responsible gun laws. Anyone who fails a background check can easily find a gun online on one of Washington’s private gun marketplaces with no background checks required. A seller can sell to a criminal as long as the seller doesn’t ask if he’s a criminal, and the criminal doesn’t tell. This is not responsible, or moral, but it’s perfectly legal.
Initiative 594 will make it much more difficult for criminals to acquire guns. I-594 will require a background check on gun sale or transfer. There are a number of exceptions for hunting, sporting, and self defense so that you could, for example, take a friend hunting and loan him your gun. This law will make us all safer, without inconveniencing law-abiding gun owners like myself.
Initiative 594 won’t end gun violence, but it will reduce crime and save lives. I-594 is a strong, smart law.
