I am appalled at the facts brought to light by Adam Geller in the article on how the mentally ill are held for often months and years in solitary confinement in local jails. If this is not an egregious violation of human rights, what is?
To hold an ill person who has a brain disorder in isolation without medical treatment by a psychiatrist, without medication or human contact is the most inhumane and dehumanizing treatment I can imagine. I find it hard to accept that the United States of America tolerates this and allows it to continue.
The mentally ill in this country have been denied treatment in mental institutions due to budget cuts and denied access to psychiatric treatment at the outpatient facilities meant to replace mental institutions. We are a country that makes it almost impossible to get adequate medical treatment for a seriously mentally ill person.
If they are out of sight, out of mind in a jail or prison we don’t care what happens to them. Unless, of course, it is your son or your daughter who is mentally ill and becoming more ill each day due to the inhumane treatment in our jails and prisons.
