A recent conversation with a local volunteer Harbor Patrol officer revealed that the Olympia City Council has forgotten, disallowed, neglected to include or wants to eliminate the entity entirely. This much-needed and very important presence of an official authority on the water is an imperative for the city of Olympia and surrounding areas.
The numerous services they provide voluntarily benefit non-boaters and boaters alike, and Olympia residents especially realize the maximum benefit. Protection from suspicious vessels entering our waters, ships entering without escort, removal and disposal of hazards in the water, safety inspections, all voluntarily executed by Olympia Harbor Patrol.
Think about it for a minute ... why ignore the threat of a possible terrorist entry by boat? The presence of a Harbor Patrol is a deterrent, and there is no other water-bound deterrent in this area. No Coast Guard. No other Harbor Patrol.
Give the City Council a visit at their next meeting, or call, write, tweet, email, whatever! But, let’s help keep a Harbor Patrol in Olympia waters!
Never miss a local story.
