Recently I attended an Olympia parks plan update that was very informative. I had never really thought about the many themes and variances that the word “park” invokes. There are ball parks, amusement parks, water parks, etc. Each one of us has an idea what a park should be, but it is not necessarily the same as mine or others.
For example, since the isthmus area is a possible park site, how should it be developed? I would continue the fountain nearby, which seems quite popular with families with small children. The short street on the west would be closed. Activities would be added for tweens and teens such as volleyball or basketball courts with maybe a stage and a small dance area. Continuing west there would be gardens, bandstand and possibly a place for bocce ball, croquet, or other activity. These could be interspersed with a food court of sorts and a variety of tables and seating.
I think something like this would be a boon for developing downtown housing, too. I hope others will share their ideas for this area, after all, it will be our very own park to enjoy someday.
Never miss a local story.
