I am distressed that the Olympia City Council is choosing to ignore waterfront safety in our community by not supporting the Olympia Harbor Patrol. Three years ago our boat lost power in Henderson Inlet. We called the Coast Guard and they said they’d respond in three and a half hours. Our Harbor Patrol was there in 10 minutes, took us under tow and got us safely home. My wife subsequently joined the Harbor Patrol and has served many shifts as a crew member keeping our waterways safe. In fact, she and two other crew members were recently decorated by the Chief of Police for saving a wounded warrior who got into trouble on a kayak in our own Budd Inlet. These volunteers are well trained and dedicated to our safety. They are stood down and we can no longer count on help in our waterways. I urge the City Council to support the Harbor Patrol so that we can count on being able to safely enjoy our waterways knowing help is available.
