The Olympian’s supportive Oct. 21 editorial, Rep. Denny Heck’s affirmation and citizen lobbying through grassroots advocacy across the nation come together to confirm that our leaders are listening and taking significant action on our behalf. On Monday, world leaders met in Berlin to pledge support for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Gavi is an international organization working to expand access to childhood vaccines in the world’s poorest countries so children don’t senselessly die from diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea, measles, and polio. The U.S. made our largest pledge ever: $1 billion over four years! Combined with support from other countries, this money will help propel Gavi to reach 300 million more children with immunizations by 2020 - saving over 5 million lives and building poor countries’ overall health care systems so they can respond to the needs of their people. The Olympia chapter of RESULTS extends appreciation to all the local supporters for this historic event.
