I was saddened to hear about the closure of the Shelton swimming pool while at the WIAA Swimming and Diving State Tournament at the aquatic center in Federal Way. Shelton High School had some top competitors at the tournament. If the Shelton School Board goes ahead with its plan to close the swimming pool, the opportunity to swim competitively will be difficult to pursue or even lost to future Shelton High School students.
I was further dismayed when I read Michelle Schreiber’s Feb. 25 letter to the editor regarding the pool closure and learned about all the community swimming programs that will also be lost. Schools benefit from having community members present at school facilities in many ways and actively look for ways to get community members into our schools. The swimming pool is a wonderful resource for all members of a community from preschoolers to senior citizens. And in our western Washington water environment it could be said to be a safety issue to teach as many people as possible to swim. Surely the school board can delay this action and look for additional community support to keep the Shelton High School pool open.
