The Puget Sound is at the core of Olympia recreationally, culturally and economically. It’s a wrong move for the city of Olympia to eliminate the police department’s harbor patrol program. It was just in 2013 that Olympia voters overwhelmingly voted to raise the sales tax to provide more resources to the police department and public safety programs. Now, the city can’t find $30,000 per year to continue the volunteer-run harbor patrol. That seems disingenuous.
Reduce the frequency of patrols to save a few dollars, but don’t cut it entirely – that’s a big step backward.
