After some 30 years, and two overwhelmingly failed previous attempts at a home rule charter in Thurston County, a group of pro home rule charter supporters have asked the county commissioners to start the process to approve and place another freeholders election on the ballot this November.
The freeholders would then have one year to design a home rule charter plan for the ballot in 2016. Clark County overwhelmingly rejected a home rule charter last November. Some current home rule counties in Washington are looking into getting rid of their expensive home rule and go back to less government.
Home rule will expand county government from three to seven commissioners, with an appointed executive, creating more staff positions, probably a new office for the expanded personnel – and possibly even take away current existing elected county positions that we now directly vote for, and make those offices appointed! A home rule charter is snake oil. It will make our already high property taxes go even higher to pay for the new proposed grandiose county government. “Just say NO to Home Rule Charter” in Thurston County; don’t buy into it as we can’t afford it!
