I don’t really believe in government by initiative, but this may be the exception. Let’s pay state legislators a flat fee of $60,000 per year, period! No per diem, no expenses, no gifts from lobbyists, no travel costs, no extra pay for special sessions. Nothing.
They would be assigned one part-time staff only while in session. This would be for a period of 10 years. At that time a citizens committee appointed by the governor could make recommendations for changes to be voted up or down by the citizens.
Sixty thousand dollars is more than most educators make per year and, from what I see, most educators are worth a whole lot more than most legislators. Tim Eyman, where are you when we need you?
