Faced with a year and half of presidential campaigning and an interminable parade of candidates, among whom none may claim entitlement to the highest office, I need a clear standard by which to vote. It is a sad fact that we most often elect the candidate who enables us to blame others for our problems, rather than the candidate who inspires us to take responsibility for ourselves.
The right blames our nation’s crisis on immigrants and “foreign” religion. Its solution? Bomb Third World villages and close our borders.
The left blames all our problems on the free market. Its solution? State over-control: Pour other peoples’ money into insatiable federal bureaucracies, providing cradle-to-grave entitlements that ask nothing in return.
I am looking for a new kind of politician, one who inspires me to do my best rather than to scapegoat others. I will vote for the politics of self-reliance rather than the politics of blame.
