I’m supporting Marco Rossi for mayor of Olympia because it’s time we started taking a holistic approach to how we solve problems. Environmental issues, social issues, economic issues – they are all connected and can’t be solved singularly.
Our local democracy has followed national trends over the last decade. Voter turnout is abysmal and the average, working class person is simply not engaged. Incumbents refuse to get out the vote and reach out to people of color or people living in poverty, simply because they’re less likely to vote, because the data says so. Well if we never bother to reach out to new voters, then the same people will continue to elect the same people, and we’ll see the same kinds of policies that further marginalize and exclude, instead of embracing diversity and new ideas.
What’s the golden thread woven throughout some of the most controversial issues over the last decade? It’s that the people don’t feel listened to, heard, or represented. Olympia For All is a political movement that seeks to shift the paradigm from top down, inaccessible, closed-door local government to an open and engaged form of direct democracy where people and their opinions are actually embraced and valued. We’ve tried us vs. them. We’ve tried pushing people out. We’ve tried ignoring the people. It hasn’t worked and it’s only worsened the divides in our community.
