April is Child Abuse Awareness month. A time to open our eyes, minds, hearts and pocketbooks to the devastating problem of child abuse). One in 10 children under the age of 18 are victims of sexual abuse, making up only 21 percent of all child abuse cases. In comparison, children under 18 years of age who will be diagnosed with cancer is 1 in 285. Funding, attention and research to cancer surpasses that devoted to child abuses by more than 10 fold.
One thing that everyone needs to do, at a bare minimum, is to become aware of the problem and the steps needed to prevent, recognize and react responsibly to it. Through this knowledge we can send a loud and clear message that child abuse in any form will not be tolerated.
Providence St Peter Hospital along with Monarch have taken steps to educate our community regarding childhood sexual abuse by offering free classes. The evening classes are held every other month with the next class on May 19. To attend please register at provregister.org and link to the Darkness to Light tab. Darkness to Light is a nationally recognized organization. For more information, you can go to D2L.org or call 360 493-7469.
