Gifts of giving are priceless
Individuals, groups and businesses active in philanthropy in South Sound often fly under the radar, invisible to the public, but busy with their gifts of time, money, in-kind services and community-building ideas.Since most philanthropists do not seek out publicity for their good deeds, it’s heartening to know that there’s a mechanism in place to shine the spotlight on deserving, charitable givers each year through the South Sound Partners for Philanthropy. The partners, a consortium of nonprofit and community groups active in charitable giving, host a Leadership in Philanthropy Awards luncheon each year to pay tribute to those active in worthy community causes. This year’s award winners include:• Titus-Will Chevrolet, Cadillac and Hyundai, through the example set by business owner Jamie Will, was recognized this year for the ongoing efforts by Will and his employees to give back to the community. Will and the company sponsor a variety of events at South Puget Sound Community College, including a scholarship for college students enrolled in the automotive technology program.• Don Rhodes, chairman of the board of directors for Heritage Bank, was honored for his long-standing support of projects and civic events that make South Sound a better place to live, including his work with United Way of Thurston County and SPSCC.• Altrusa International of Olympia was recognized as the philanthropic organization of the year, singled out for its support of some 25 different programs in the community. Altrusa has been a key supporter of Sunshine House, which shelters visitors while family members are receiving medical care at Providence St. Peter Hospital.• Graeme Paulsen, 20, a sophomore at The Evergreen State College, was named this year’s young philanthropist of the year for his volunteer work at the Hands On Children’s Museum, the Sand in the City event, the Salvation Army and Thurston County Food Bank.“He is a delight to be around and is willing to take on many different jobs and positions,” one nominator wrote the selection committee. From successful businessmen to a college student, this year’s award winners provide shining examples of how the quality of a life in a community is enhanced by charitable giving.
