Clam diggers driving to and from the coast for this weekend's dig can expect delays in Hoquiam where U.S. Highway 101 traffic is detoured for bridge repair.
Work began Thursday at the Simpson Avenue Bridge on the Hoquiam River, KXRO reports.
Five ocean beaches are open for the evening low tide today, with Twin Harbors remaining open on the evening tides Sunday and Monday.
The Transportation Department has crews working double shifts six days a week so the bridge can reopen in January, officials say.
Never miss a local story.
The 83-year-old bridge was closed in August because of degraded pilings. It carries about 13,000 vehicles a day.
