Dennis Sherwood of Gig Harbor will give a program on "The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge" at Friday's meeting of the Tahoma Audubon Society.
The meeting will be 7:30-9 p.m., with the doors opening at 7 p.m., at the Tacoma Nature Center, 1919 S. Tyler St., Tacoma.
Sherwood will give a presentation on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and efforts to protect the land and animals. Created in 1960 and expanded in 1980, the refuge now covers 19.2 million acres, and is inhabited by 45 species of land and marine mammals.
The refuge also includes the traditional homelands and subsistence areas of Inupiaq Eskimos of the Arctic coast and the Athabascan Indians of the interior, according to the refuge website.
