Judy Bentley will discuss her new trail guide, “Hiking Washington’s History,” Saturday at the Tumwater Timberland Library.
In the book, Bentley blends Washington’s history with a narrative of 40 historic trails, ranging from short day hikes to three- or four-day backpacking trips over mountain passes in each region of the state.
Each chapter begins with a brief overview of the region’s history followed by individual trail narratives and historical highlights. Using diaries, journals, letters and reports, as well as contemporary and historic photographs, Bentley describe sites and trails from Washington’s past. Each trail description includes a map and provides directions, so hikers can follow the historic route.
Bentley is an avid hiker and the author of 14 books for young adults. She teaches part-time at South Seattle Community College.
Bentley will talk from 2-3 p.m. There also will be books available for purchase and signing. The library is at 7023 New Market St., Tumwater. For more information, contact 360-943-7790 or www.TRL.org.
