Young anglers interested in attending this year's Northwest Youth Conservation & Fly Fishing Academy must apply by April 15.
The camp, for children 12 to 16 years old, will be June 19-25. The Olympia chapter of Trout Unlimited and the South Sound Fly Fishers will host the academy at the Gwinwood Conference Center on Hicks Lake in Lacey.
The curriculum will give participants a look at ecology, hydrology, aquatic entomology, watersheds, wildlife management and fish behavior. Participants will learn fly-fishing skills, including fly casting, fly tying, fly selection, streamside ethics and etiquette, knot tying, reading water, and water safety.
Twenty-four participants will be selected based on a written essay about their desire to attend and their expectations for learning.
Cost, including meals and lodging, is $275. Fly fishing rods and reels, and fly tying equipment will be available.
