Bass-happy kids can flip out at free Cabela's Casting Kids event Saturday

• Published June 03, 2008

Kids can use all the Bass-O-Rama they can get, and the free Bassmaster Casting Kids event at Cabela's on Saturday seems like a good chance to get them a little closer to that state of bliss.

The event is for kids from 7 to 14, and they all get free casting instruction from experts before the competition starts. The kids will flip, pitch and cast a hookless lure onto a target, and the winners go on to the state finals.

By the way, flipping and pitching are methods to cast a bass lure very accurately into dense cover, such as weedbeds, stickups and even your average boat dock.

Kids who take Bass-O-Rama to heart may put themselves into contention for $21,000 in scholarship money. They all will definitely learn more about catching bass.

Every kid also gets a free hot dog and bottle of Cabela's water.

Casting Kids starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. I only wish I could get a little instruction, as my flipping skills are terrible.
