The Olympian
Fishing
Saturday and Sunday: Would-be anglers can cast their lines without having to buy a license during Free Fishing Weekend. The idea is to give people a chance to try fishing without having to buy a license.
No license is required to fish or gather shellfish, but bag limits and seasonal closures are still in effect.
Trails
Saturday: National Trails Day is a celebration of hiking, but it also means no day-use fees will be charged in Olympic or Gifford Pinchot national forests. The Washington Trails Association is putting together trail work parties — call 206-625-1367 for more information. For more information on other National Trails Day events, go to The American Hiking Society’s Web site at www.americanhiking.org/NTD.aspx.
Field class
Saturday: Join Stream Team and Washington State University’s Native Plant Salvage Project field class on identifying native trees, shrubs and perennials. “Meet the Trees of Washington” will meet in a classroom and on a nature trail from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Bus transportation to the trail is provided.
The workshop is free — but space is limited. Call the WSU Native Plant Salvage Project at 360-754-3588 ext. 110, or send an e-mail to nativeplants@wsu.edu.
