Thurston County Democrats put out word of a memorial reception this evening for Gayle Broadbent, an environmental activist and precinct-committee officer who reportedly died in a recent accident. A funeral service begins at 6 p.m. at Olympia Funeral Alternatives on North Street in Olympia.
The reception follows from 6:30 to 8:30 at the Coach House, located at 211 21st Ave. S.W., behind the State Capital Museum. Light refreshments are planned.
County Democratic Party chairman Jim Cooper said Broadbent, 40, served as a Democratic precinct officer and applied last year for the county commissioner seat that Karen Valenzuela was appointed to. Broadbent also wrote satirical letters to the editor about the effects of unchecked growth and politics.
Cooper had no details on the accident. He called Broadbent "a very hard working environmental activist in the community. She had just a spirit about her that always made people smile."
Her family has asked that donations be made to Capitol Land Trust in lieu of flowers.
