DuPONT – The Mount Rainier Chapter of the American Red Cross has supplied a DuPont family with food and clothing after their home burned in the 2200 block of Forest Avenue.

The names of the two adults and two children were not immediately known, but Red Cross spokeswoman Karen Kim said Saturday the family has received food and clothing from the organization and family members have put them up at a local hotel.

The homeowner called 9-1-1 about 5:30 a.m. Friday after he woke up to discover that the outside of his house was on fire, Lakewood Fire Captain Tom Renner said.

Fire crews from Lakewood and DuPont responded to the call for emergency services, but by the time they arrived, it was a "totally defensive fire," with firefighters working to protect neighboring houses, Renner said.

Family members and pets were not injured and some valuables were salvaged from the home, he said.

Renner estimated damages to the 2,800- to 3,000-square-foot house at $350,000 to $400,000.

A fire investigation is pending with the Lakewood Fire Marshal, Renner said.
