Achievements

To mark the centennial celebration of the Mason County Fair, children in Mason County were invited to illustrate what 100 years of fair meant to them.

The following children won in their respective categories: Bethany Spears, grand prize winner. In the 2-6 age group, Lukas Hansen, 6, first place; Olivia Lacey, 5, second place; Riley Crichton, 5, third place. In the 7-10 age group, Hunter Crichton, 9, first place; Zachary Hansen, 8, second place; Anika Parker, 9, third place. In the 11-14 age group, Bethany Spears, 12, first place; Sydney Crichton, 11, second place; Tessa Blackstad, 12, third place. In the 15-17 age group, Katy Gunter, 17, first place.

There also were awards to runners-up, and fourth- and fifth-place winners, with special mentions to Ty Lacey, 4; Bryson Crichton, 7; Stephanie Holter, 10; and Tayla Blackstad, 10, for their entries.

Arrivals

The Olympia office of The Salvation Army has announced the arrival of new Corps officers: Major Clement and Evangeline Leslie will be heading up the local Salvation Army operations.

Appointments

Jon Lenander has been appointed personal representative for the Olympia area Scottish Rite Masons. He will serve as liaison for the state organization and will assist in coordinating the Olympia activities of the international association.

Military

BASIC TRAINING

Air Force Airman Shane A. Schackmann graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Anthony Schackmann of Belfair and a 2005 graduate of North Mason High School, Belfair.

Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Mailani E. Acdal graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. She is the daughter of May and Wesley Acdal of Belfair, and a 2007 graduate of North Mason High School, Belfair.

Army Reserve Pvt. Brett T. Akers graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2006 graduate of Yelm High School.

Assignments

Army Chief Warrant Officer 3 Daniel E. Fink has arrived for duty at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany. He is the son-in-law of Joan and Michael Pierce of Tenino.

Air Force Airman Joel C. Roinas has arrived for duty at RAF Lakenheath, England. He is the son of Lisa and Nels Roinas of Belfair and a 2007 graduate of North Mason High School, Belfair.

Commissioned

Michael D. Beagle has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army after completing the Army ROTC program and graduating with a bachelor's degree from Washington State University. Beagle is the son of Jennifer Levesque and Douglas Beagle, both of Olympia.

Joshua R. Loquvam has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army after completing the Army ROTC program and graduating with a bachelor's degree from Washington State University. Loquvam is the son of Beckie and David Loquvam of Lacey and a 2004 graduate of Timberline High School.

Deployed

Navy Lt. Ryan A. Chappell has deployed to Ali Air Force Base, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Chappell is the son of Sue and Ralph Chappell of Olympia, and he is a 1998 graduate of River Ridge High School.

Awards

Sgt. Jacquelyne D. Gutierrez received the Distinguished Honor Graduate Award, the Distinguished Leadership Award, and the Commandant's Superior Physical Fitness Award at the Henry H. Lind Noncommissioned Officer Academy graduation ceremony for the Warrior Leader Course.
