Artifacts found at port, stopping construction
The discovery of artifacts has stopped work on a project at Port of Centralia.
The state Department of Archaeology is negotiating with the developer, Opus Northwest of Seattle, and the Chehalis and Cowlitz tribes over hiring a consultant to survey the site. Opus bought the 77-acre property in December for $4.8 million to develop a distribution center.
The state agency will monitor the survey and must provide a permit before work can resume.
Sponsored trucks to benefit Special Olympics
About 200 trucks will roll through South Sound today as part of a convoy from Tacoma to Grand Mound to benefit Special Olympics, event organizers say.
Money is raised through sponsorships of $100 per truck. The rigs will gather at Tacoma Dome and leave starting about 9 a.m.
The event raised more than $17,000 for Special Olympics last year, organizers say. There will be a luncheon and awards ceremony at the truck wash and chrome shop at Exit 88 on Interstate 5.
The convoy will travel with a police escort. For more information, go to www.sowa.org.
State, Northwest Trek to release 500 frogs
Biologists from the Fish and Wildlife Department and Northwest Trek wildlife park plan to release about 500 frogs Monday at Dailman Lake at Fort Lewis.
The Oregon spotted frog is an endangered species in Washington. These seven-month-old frogs were collected in the wild as eggs and given a head start at Northwest Trek.
The project is a joint effort with a number of agencies and organizations, including zoos in Seattle, Tacoma and Portland that are taking part in Year of the Frog — the global effort to save the amphibians.
Weapons to be fired Monday through Friday
Fort Lewis will conduct weapons firing day and night Monday through Friday, as well as Sept. 30, at various points on the base.
