Evergreen class to clean up downtown

The Evergreen State College class "Community Connections," a transition program for new students, will be cleaning up downtown Olympia from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. today in preparation for Arts Walk on Friday.

Between 20 and 30 students are expected. The cleanup is an attempt to contribute after lack of volunteers caused the Olympia Downtown Association to cancel its cleanup, which had been planned for last weekend.

Memorial today for soldier killed in Iraq War

Fort Lewis will remember Pfc. Leonard J. Gulczynski in a memorial service today at 3:30 p.m. in Main Post Chapel.

Gulczynski, 19, of Carol Stream, Ill., died Sept. 17 in Iraq of wounds received when his military vehicle was involved in an incident, according to the Department of Defense.

Gulczynski was assigned to 610th Engineer Support Company, 14th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, which deployed to Iraq in March.

According to unit records, Gulczynski entered military service June 7, 2007. After completing advanced individual training in his specialty of 21E: heavy construction equipment operator at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., he reported to Fort Lewis on Nov. 21, 2007.

Tenino

Two women arrested in copper wire theft

Tenino police arrested two women on suspicion of copper wire theft Monday after someone reportedly saw them taking telephone wire that had been displaced during a sewer construction project on Old Highway 99, Tenino police Chief Joe Vukich said.

Thurston County Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jon Tunheim said Tuesday his office will recommend the charges be filed in municipal court, since the value of the copper wire did not exceed $250.

The women were released from the county jail.

Crafts, animals, games at first 4-H Clover Fair

A mini fair to explain what 4-H is all about will take place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Thurston County Fairgrounds.

Called the first 4-H Clover Fair, it is free and will feature activities, games, crafts and animals. 4-H projects range from fine arts to rocketry to dog obedience.

Along with signing up kids for 4-H, organizers also hope to attract adult volunteers.
