Events will address war's effects on families, more

Various aspects of the Iraq War will be discussed at several events this month.

They include:

Oct. 12: Wayne Smith will speak at Lacey Timberland Regional Library, 500 College St. S.E., Lacey, in a free event at 2:30 p.m. Smith is a Vietnam War veteran who earned a Nobel Peace Prize for work with Vietnamese and U.S. soldiers.

He will introduce two projects:

• The Iraqi Student Solidarity Committee at The Evergreen State College in Olympia raised money to bring displaced students to complete their educations in Olympia.

• Coffee Strong will open in about eight weeks near Fort Lewis. Active-duty soldiers, veterans and families will gather to support each other and use resources.

Oct. 17-19: A weekend Peace Works Conference, featuring discussions on military occupations in the Middle East, will take place at The Evergreen State College.

Oct. 20: Antonia Juhasz will discuss her book, "The Tyranny of Oil," at 7 p.m. in Olympia at Capitol Theater, 206 Fifth Ave. S.E. Tickets are $11 at www.buyolympia.com.
