Soldier jailed, suspected of killing friend
A Fort Lewis soldier was arrested Monday on suspicion of fatally shooting a friend after a long day of drinking, Pierce County sheriff's officials said.
The suspect, 23, was booked into jail just after 3 p.m. on one count of first-degree manslaughter.
The victim, 31, who also was in the military, had spent Sunday at his Lakewood apartment, watching football and drinking before going over to his friend's place in Parkland, sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said.
The suspect told officers he woke up about 1:30 a.m. and found his friend dead on the floor of the apartment, he said. The suspect, described as "extremely intoxicated," called 9-1-1.
"Guns came out and a round was fired," Troyer said. "We believe he was responsible for the shot, though it might not have been on purpose."
Investigators were putting together a time line of events.
