$615,000 slated for area law enforcement

President Barack Obama announced billions of dollars in law enforcement grants during a speech Friday in Columbus, Ohio, including $36,706,591 for Washington municipalities.

The grants are part of the $787 billion stimulus package that Obama signed into law last month. Local governments that will receive money are Thurston County, $193,386; Olympia, $86,503; Mason County, $77,445; Lacey, $61,141; Centralia, $56,385; Shelton, $43,251; Lewis County, $38,043; Tumwater, $25,589; Chehalis, $23,777; and Yelm, $10,190.

Thurston County

Sheriff misled by report of luring

A report of an attempted luring Thursday near Lydia Hawk Elementary School was false, according to Thurston County Sheriff Chief Jim Chamberlain.

The 9- and 10-year-old sisters who made the report were pretending and got caught up in their story, Chamberlain said.

Fort Lewis

Massing of the Colors planned for Sunday

The Military Order of the World Wars will host its Massing of the Colors at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Fort Lewis Soldiers Field House.

The event is billed as a commemoration of patriots with a celebration of music and U.S. history.

High school and elementary students will present their colors, as will military units from Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base.

Nisqually

Mapping of delta floor by USCG continues

The U.S. Coast Guard is mapping the sea floor at the Nisqually River Delta this weekend.

The work began Friday and ends Sunday. It is in support of the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge dike-removal project, which involves 750 acres of diked land being returned to natural tidal processes.

A Coast Guard research vessel, the R/V Parke Snavely, is being used for the work. It is outfitted with sonar and Doppler radar.

Benefit set for 2006 hurricane survivors

Thurston County Democrats plan a benefit for the St. Bernard Project at 5:30 p.m. today at Worthington Center at Saint Martin's University.

The event includes dinner and a live auction. The project, described at www.stbernard project.org, is aimed at helping survivors of the 2006 hurricanes rebuild their lives.
