Lacey receives award from state organization
The city recently was honored by the Association of Washington Cities for its participation in Lacey Loves to Read, a community literacy program.The four-year-old program, a partnership with North Thurston Public Schools and Lacey Timberland Library, is designed to celebrate reading. As part of the program, residents of all ages are encouraged to read books by a chosen award-winning author throughout February. The program culminates with a two-day visit by the author.This year's featured author was Pat Mora. Her public appearances were Feb. 27-28.Lacey Loves to Read was one of eight projects selected to receive a Municipal Excellence Award. The city won the Community Service Award.The Association of Washington Cities received 62 entries. Entries were evaluated by independent judges "who were selected for their knowledge of and enthusiasm for local government," according to the association.The awards are presented annually to "cities that have demonstrated outstanding achievements in promoting community excellence," the association states.
