CARSON, Calif. – If five consecutive MLS draws caused Seattle coach Sigi Schmid frustration, a loss could hardly improve his mood.
Yet that’s what he got Saturday as Eduardo Lillingston scored in the 38th minute to give Chivas USA a 1-0 victory over Sounders FC.
Zach Thornton made three saves to earn his MLS-leading seventh shutout for Chivas USA (8-2-3), which snapped a three-game winless streak and extended the expansion Sounders’ winless streak to six. Seattle dropped to 4-3-5.
Lillingston tapped in the rebound after Paulo Nagamura’s 7-yard shot was blocked by sliding goalkeeper Kasey Keller, a native of Lacey.
Thornton preserved the lead when he jumped to his left to deflect Freddie Ljungberg’s 16-yard line drive with his left hand in the 56th minute. Seattle played with 10 men after forward Nate Jaqua received a red card in the 88th minute.
