Shin-Soo Choo won’t be donning military fatigues anytime soon.
South Korea beat Taiwan, 9-3, in Guangzhou, China, on Friday to earn the gold medal in the Asian Games, clinching exemption from military service for all its players, including the Cleveland outfielder.
“It’s a great relief, for Choo and for all of us too,” Indians manager Manny Acta told ESPNdeportes.com.
Choo was 8-for-14 (.571) in the games with three homers, 11 RBI and eight runs scored.
Anything other than a gold medal could have forced Choo, 28, into a two-year military training stint in South Korea, which requires men to complete the service before they reach the age of 30.
