The New York Giants must be tired of traveling to Minnesota by now.
The Vikings and Giants were supposed to play today for the ninth time in the last 10 regular seasons, a scheduling quirk that has slated seven of those meetings – this year is three in a row – for Minneapolis.
With more than a foot of blowing snow falling in the Twin Cities area Saturday, the Giants’ charter flight was forced to land in Kansas City, Mo., instead, and the game was pushed back to Monday night.
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed the decision in an e-mail message Saturday night, with the Twin Cities under 15 or more inches of snow and the Giants stranded in Kansas City.
Never miss a local story.
The game will start at 5 p.m. – ahead of the Ravens-Texans Monday Night Football game at 5:30 – and will not be televised.
The delay gives Vikings quarterback Brett Favre another day to heal. Favre is aiming to make his 298th straight start, with a sprained shoulder that makes throwing difficult.
CHARLES’ BIG DEAL
Running back Jamaal Charles has signed a new contract with the Chiefs, a league source told The Kansas City Star.
ESPN.com reported Saturday that the new deal is for five years and $32.5 million, including $13 million guaranteed.
Charles leads the Chiefs with 1,137 rushing yards and leads the NFL at 6.2 yards per carry, bolstering the Chiefs’ No. 1-ranked rushing offense, which averages 175.2 yards per game. Charles, who will turn 24 on Dec. 27, is in his third NFL season.
Philadelphia Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel won’t play against the Dallas Cowboys tonight because of a knee injury. Eagles right tackle Winston Justice also isn’t going to Dallas because of a knee injury. Kanasas City quarterback Matt Cassel didn’t travel to San Diego on Saturday and is out for the Chiefs’ game against the Chargers. Cassel, having the finest year of his career for the AFC West-leading Chiefs, underwent an emergency appendectomy Wednesday morning. Philadelphia defensive end Trent Cole has been fined $20,000 by the NFL for hitting Houston quarterback Matt Schaub in the knee area. Cardinals defensive tackle Alan Branch has been docked $10,000 for roughing the passer for his hit on Rams rookie quarterback Sam Bradford. The Denver Broncos signed free-agent kicker Steven Hauschka and waived offensive lineman Stanley Daniels. The Detroit Lions placed linebacker Isaiah Ekejiuba on injured reserve and signed offensive tackle Tony Ugoh to fill the roster spot.
