2010 record/finish: 92-70, first place; World Series champions
Manager: Bruce Bochy (fifth season)
Key additions: SS Miguel Tejada
Key losses: SS Edgar Renteria, IF Juan Uribe
Outlook: No one expected them to win the World Series with a collection of castoffs and retreads. But that’s what starting pitching can do for you, particularly in the postseason. The question will be whether the group of starters – Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner and Jonathan Sanchez – will feel the effects of throwing so many additional innings last year. The lineup is basically the same, but can the group of self-proclaimed misfits match their overachieving numbers from last season?
Player to watch: 3B Pablo Sandoval. The chubby third baseman shed 30 pounds in the offseason in an attempt to regain his 2009 form. The Giants could use any offensive help he would provide.
Will win the west if ... their starting pitchers show no ill effects from last season.
