Toby's Corner, an 8-1 shot, surged past previously unbeaten Uncle Mo and Arthur's Tale in the stretch to post a stunning upset in the $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct in New York on Saturday.
Uncle Mo, who had won his first four races by a combined 27 lengths, came into the Grade 1 Wood as the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby in four weeks.
Elsewhere: Sent off at 13-1 odds, Midnight Interlude rallied in the stretch under Victor Espinoza to beat Comma to the Top by a head in the $1 million Santa Anita Derby, another Derby prep. The Bob Baffert-trained colt ran 11/8 miles in 1:48.66. Mr. Commons was third. ... Lilacs and Lace, a 49-1 long shot, pulled off a stunner in the $400,000 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., covering the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.73. Joe Vann won the $300,000 Illinois Derby at Hawthorne in Cicero, Ill. The colt covered the 11/8 miles in 1:51.91 to win by 41/2 lengths.
