Coach: Dennis Erickson (31-26, fifth season)
Last week: Lost to UCLA, 29-28
Against the Cougars: Arizona State leads, 23-12-2. The Sun Devils won last year, 42-0, in Tempe.
Washington connections: Erickson, an Everett native, is a former WSU and Seattle Seahawks head coach. Freshmen redshirting at ASU include tight end Alex Bykovskiy from Decatur High School in Federal Way and defensive end Taylor Kamitomo from Ferris High in Spokane. Defensive tackle Bo Moos is the son of WSU athletic director Bill Moos. Wide receiver Aaron Pflugrad and linebackers coach Trent Bray played at Pullman High when their fathers (Robin Pflugrad and Craig Bray) were assistant coaches at WSU. Craig is ASU’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Erickson’s son, Bryce, is the running backs coach. Former WSU stars Steve Broussard and Greg Burns coach wide receivers and defensive backs, respectively. Offensive line coach Gregg Smith assisted Erickson at WSU. Tight ends coach Jamie Christian played at Central Washington.
Scouting report: The weather forecast calls for temperatures in the 30s and possible rain and snow showers, which could pose problems for the visitors from sunny Arizona. However, quarterback Brock Osweiler is a native of chilly Kalispell, Mont., and ferocious middle linebacker Vontaze Burfict is probably too ornery to get cold. Burfict and his teammates might not be in the best of moods after falling out of the Top 25 due to a one-point loss at UCLA on Saturday. ASU, fighting for the Pac-12 South Division title, is 1-3 on the road. The Cougars, last in the North, are celebrating Dad’s Weekend.
Did you know? Aaron Pflugrad and Trent Bray appeared set to play for the Cougars. They wound up at Oregon and Oregon State, respectively, when their fathers left WSU to take assistant coaching jobs at those schools.
