The San Diego Padres signed first baseman/outfielder Mark Kotsay to a one-year contract that keeps him with the team through 2013.
Kotsay, 36, was eligible for free agency at the end of the season. He is hitting .275 with one home run and nine RBI in 55 games.
Kotsay has made 15 starts in left field, five in right field and two at first base.
San Diego general manager Josh Byrnes says Kotsay provides versatility, a very good late-game at-bat and “invaluable leadership.”
Kotsay is in his 16th season and has also played with the Florida Marlins, Oakland, Atlanta, Boston, the Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee.
He is a .278 lifetime hitter with 125 homers.
NO SURGERY FOR MIDDLEBROOKS
After hearing a bone in his right wrist snap, Boston rookie Will Middlebrooks gladly listened to a bit of better news.
The Red Sox’s third baseman does not need surgery.
“We’ll see how it goes for a few weeks,” Middlebrooks said Sunday. “They (doctors) said it should heal just fine without surgery.”
The rookie also said he is “not sure” if he will be able to return this season, however.
Middlebrooks has hit .288 with 15 homers and 54 RBIs in 75 games this season.
