This week: John Deere Classic, Thursday through Sunday, TPC Deer Run, Silvis, Illinois.
In the field: Puyallup’s Ryan Moore, Gig Harbor’s Kyle Stanley and Tacoma’s Troy Kelly.
World rankings: Moore is 40th, Stanley is 228th, and Kelly is 1,534th.
2013-14 earnings: Moore has $2.57 million (17th on the PGA Tour), Stanley has $277,729 (162nd on the PGA Tour), and Kelly has not earned any money on the PGA Tour.
The skinny: Moore took the past two weeks off after his tied-for-fifth showing at the Travelers Championship (12-under-par 268), where he led after 54 holes before finishing with a 1-over 70. It was his fifth top-10 finish of the season, which ranks tied for 16th on the PGA Tour. The Cascade Christian graduate has been mentioned on the short list of favorites this week. And why not? He has never missed the cut at this event in five previous appearances, with a personal-best tied-for-eighth effort in 2012. … This is where it all (sort of) began for Stanley in 2011. As a PGA Tour rookie, he rallied to take the lead in the final round, only to watch Steve Stricker make a 30-foot putt for birdie from off the green on the final hole to win. Stanley missed the cut here last season but tied for 18th in 2012. Last week at the The Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia, the Bellarmine Prep product tied for 35th (4-under 276), his best finish since last October. … Kelly missed the cut last week (4-over 144), getting a bad break when he played in the windy Friday afternoon conditions that produced the highest scores of the week. He’s missed the cut in both previous trips to the John Deere, in 2009 and 2012.
Tee times Thursday: Moore at 5:30 a.m. (PDT) off the 10th tee, Kelly at 10:25 a.m. off the 10th tee and Stanley at 11:05 a.m. off the first tee.
