Before former Bellarmine Prep and University of Washington basketball star Abdul Gaddy heads off to the Italian League, he is sticking around for a few more weeks to host his youth camps.
Over the next two weekends, the Abdul Gaddy Point Guard Basketball Camp will take place at the Boys & Girls Club D A Gonyea Branch in north Tacoma.
The first two-day camp, Saturday and Sunday, is for younger children — boys and girls from first to sixth grade — and will go from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. both days. Cost is $50.
The second round is Aug. 9-10, this time for students in seventh to 12th grade. Again, same times and cost.
Gaddy, 22, left the Huskies ranked No. 2 in career assists. His skills-building camps will focus on basic and advanced point guard fundamentals, including ball-handling, passing and shooting drills.
Special guest speakers expected to make appearances include Gaddy’s former UW teammate Isaiah Thomas, who recently signed with the Phoenix Suns; UW coach Lorenzo Romar; former Stadium High School and University of Montana standout Anthony Johnson; and motivational speaker John Gaines.
To register, either go online to abdulgaddybasketball.com, or email firstname.lastname@example.org to get a registration form. Walk-ups are also welcomed.
Gaddy spent training camp last fall with the Charlotte Bobcats before playing in the NBA Developmental League with the Maine Red Claws, a Boston Celtics affiliate. He signed a one-year deal with Virtus Bologna, a two-time Euroleague champion, on Wednesday. He expects to immediately be a starter at point guard.
